Introduction: The relationship between traumatic experiences and psychopathological symptoms is widely recognized in various studies, however, regarding the prison population studies are reduced greatly. As for the mediation of self-compassion and dissociation in this relationship, it is something that has not yet been studied. Objetive: This study aimed to understand the relationship between traumatic experiences and psychopathology in a sample of prisoners and the mediating role of compassion and dissociative experiences in this relationship. It was also intended to analyze the intensity of the psychopathology, traumatic experiences, dissociation, compassion and self-pity. Method: 34 inmates were recruited by a male researcher, and 33 were recruited by a female researcher. The average age of these 67 patients was 34.85 (SD = 8.98), and ranged between the ages of 19 and 67 years. For the data collection, the Traumatic Experiences Checklist was used to assess traumatic experiences; the Dissociative Experiences Scale was used for dissociative experiences; the Self-Compassion Scale for self-pity levels and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales and Brief Symptom Inventory for the psychopathological symptoms. Results: Given the results obtained by the Dissociative Experiences Scale (M±SD = 20.94 ± 16.22) and by the Traumatic experiences Checklist (M ± SD = 7.09 ± 3.46), our sample revealed higher values than the obtained by samples of the general population. Regarding self-pity, the values (M ± SD = 83.79 ± 10.74) have proved slightly lower compared to the general population samples, however, some of subscales of the Self-Compassion Scale demonstrated to be superior when compared to these same samples. Participants who had shown the most traumatic experiences revealed more psychopathological symptoms (p <0.01) such as increased dissociative experiences (p <0.01). With respect to levels of self-pity, they proved to be lower in those individuals with increased dissociative experiences (p <0.05), however, when compassion proved to be higher, psychopathological symptoms presented themselves as lower (p <0.01). In those individuals who showed higher dissociative experiences, psychopathological symptoms also presented themselves as higher (p <0.01). Psychopathological symptoms were lower in individuals who reported higher levels of education (p <0.01). As for mediation, it was non-existent for the two proposed study variables. Conclusion: The prison population showed levels of traumatic and dissociative experiences and also higher psychopathological symptoms than the general population. The relationship between dissociative and traumatic experiences, psychopathological symptoms and self-pity levels were also confirmed by this study. Traumatic experiences affect the long-term functioning of the inmate, increasing levels of dissociation and psychopathological symptoms, just as dissociative experiences can lead to further psychopathological symptoms. Moreover, dissociative experiences can lead to decreased levels of self-pity, the latter of which can contribute for superior mental health.
