(Ci.Inf., Brasília, DF, 2017-11-10) Baldi, Vania; Rodrigues, Rui
Between web platforms and smartphone applications we find technological proposals that seek to relieve us of the most deeply rooted taboos in our human condition. On the one hand we have proposals to perpetuate our existence, to overcome the anguish of our ineluctable disappearance (and the feeling of absence that causes the memory of those who have passed away), on the other hand we are faced with requests for instant gratification provided by the searches of packaged digitally partners in seductive profiles and potentially within our reach. Comparing sites such as boxego.com, thedigitalbeyond.com or eternal9, services that promise that “when the heart stops beating, it will keeping tweeting”, with other mobile services like Tinder or Happn, which promote love combinations between strangers, it will attempt an analysis of the cultural paradoxes reflected by sociotechnical transformations. This article aims to reflect on some new scenarios of info-communicational behaviors, questioning the emergence of new ethical challenges that do not refer strictly to a logic of operational and informational competences, but on digital environments that structure specific expectations and habits of interaction, being these new “relationship” algorithmically mediated the effect of a search for interactivity camouflaged by interaction. Thus we have two contemporary dimensions of psychosocial experience, which emerge through the potentialities offered by digital technologies, and which allow us to understand and reveal ambivalent and profound aspects of an ethic and aesthetic “onlife” in constant “mediamorphosis”.

Influence of the graphical layout of television news on the viewers: An eye tracking study
(OberCom, CIES-IUL, 2016-01) Rodrigues, Rui; Veloso, Ana; Mealha, Óscar
Television news has continuously experienced several changes, especially related to graphic overlays. The problem with watching TV news is the way viewers receive and process information broadcast by these programmes, given the variety of visual and audio stimuli with which they are confronted. This study focuses on the influence of the graphical layout on the viewers. Specifically, it examines message recall related to TV news. These goals were achieved by means of a case study using eye tracking, applied in two types of TV news broadcasts: one with graphical elements and another with a clean feed (only with the anchor). Finally, participants answered a questionnaire on the contents within the various graphical elements overlaid on the TV news viewed.

(12th Iberian Conference on Information Systems and Technologies (CISTI), 2017-07-13) Rodrigues, Rui; Baldi, Vania
In a society where smartphones and mobile connectivity increasingly act as mediators and enhancers of social ties, we can identify technological solutions that bring new challenges to the user, particularly in the way he interacts and communicates with others. This article, by focusing on mobile apps that promote social and loving ties between strangers (Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, etc.), driven by a swipe-based interaction paradigm, aims to explore new challenges, that not only imply technical and operational skills, but also particular habits of interaction (the so-called “swipe culture”). These new behaviours, that include choices and interactions made by the users (actions like accept, discard and/or moving to the next user), as well as the standardized and algorithmically mediated choices made by the apps algorithms, brought to life new scenarios related to info-communicational behaviours. Therefore, the swipe culture and user centered design (UCD) triggered these new habits and behaviours, that were made possible by the features offered by mobile dating applications. Finally, these new habits and behaviours revealed new perceptions and trends in how interactions and relationships can become more disposable, sterile and standardized in the described context.

The challenges in the development of technological research projects in generational gap contexts
(DIGICOM - International Conference on Digital Design & Communication, 2020-11) Rodrigues, Rui; Melro, Ana
The generational differences that exist in a society or community are not only evidence that one cannot be escape, but a plus for its development. Furthermore, this allows an existence of a connection to the past and as a way of continuity for the future. However, and to increase this importance, the analysis of generational gaps is considered as an aspect that allows development, innovation and creativity, considering the specific context of the research project LOCUS - playfuL cOnneCted rUral territorieS. The article aims to contextualize the generational gaps in Amiais, Sever do Vouga, Portugal and is part of the LOCUS project. The LOCUS project has as main goal to carry out a survey of cultural heritage of the village, with the purpose of developing and apply an Internet of Things (IoT) system for use by residents, stakeholders and visitors. The methodology described in the article is the analysis of the ethnographic research results, namely interviews with privileged informants and informal conversations with residents. Based on these results, it is intended to outline the challenges that are expected to be found in the technological development of the project and the way as it is expected to outcome them.

THE PRESENCE OF THREE PORTUGUESE TV NEWS CHANNELS (RTP3, SIC NOTÍCIAS, AND TVI24) ON FACEBOOK
(3rd International Conference on Education, Social Sciences and Humanities, 2016-08-26) Rodrigues, Rui; Ferreira, Sónia
The growing popularity of social networks, and their impact on the daily lives of consumers, contributed to news organizations marking their presence on different online platforms. In the case of Facebook, a social network that began as a personal space, it has gradually transformed into a content-sharing space (Oeldorf-Hirsch & Sundar, 2015). Nowadays, Facebook is the second most viewed website in Portugal (Alexa, 2016), and therefore, it has become crucial for Portuguese news agencies to be present on this social network. Although television continues to be the main information source in Portugal, social networks, and specifically Facebook, are increasingly important in news consumption by users (ERC, 2015). This new way of news dissemination, as well as the proliferation that these contents reach in social networks, led to news agencies exploiting these new channels, both to attract new audiences, and to redirect users to their own websites (Castillo, El-Haddad, Pfeffer, & Stempeck, 2014). Thus, it is important to understand how, and what kind of content these agencies put on their Facebook channels, as well as the strategies they use to share these same contents. This study aims to understand how the main news channels of Portuguese TV (RTP3, SIC Notícias, and TVI24) manage and use the social network Facebook to share news contents. To this end, the authors collected quantitative data of all posts placed on Facebook between February 8 and February 14 2016. Approximately 1063 posts were collected and analysed from the three Facebook pages. The results indicate that two of the three channels extensively used their Facebook pages to share and target content to their official websites. Regarding the news sources and type of media used, the three Portuguese TV news channels use similar strategies. However, in what concerns the main thematic and quantity of messages per day, as well as the level of redundancy of information, the three channels operate their pages differently.

THE USER PARTICIPATION ON FACEBOOK PAGES OF THE THREE PORTUGUESE TV NEWS CHANNELS – RTP3, SIC NOTÍCIAS, AND TVI24
(3rd International Conference on Education, Social Sciences and Humanities, 2016-05) Ferreira, Sónia; Rodrigues, Rui
In recent decades, the national and international media contexts, in particular television, media significantly changed. Although they were not created for the purpose, the role that social networks, in particular Facebook, have taken as a content diffusion platform is unquestionable. Nowadays, traditional media (radio, newspaper, television) use the Web’s potential to distribute news content (Canelas, 2011). Currently, all TV news channels in Portugal have a website or a page on social networks. TV stations have increased communication channels with the public on digital platforms and study strategies that promote the participation and interaction with the news content (Cazajeira, 2015). The TV / Internet convergence will not only reach the content, but also the consumer, who becomes an interactive and participative audience. This reality imposes on journalism a continuous and updated news production system, dependent on a user being permanently connected to the Internet (Cazajeira, 2015). In fact, an ERC report (2015) confirms the relevance that social media has assumed in the publication and consumption of news. Social networks are recognised as one of the most important means for news media consultation, right after television, and the practice of sharing news is very common among consumers of online news in Portugal. Furthermore, when compared to other countries analysed by Reuters Institute (Newman, Levy, & Nielsen, 2015), Portuguese consumers are those who make the most comments to online news, preferring social networks to news sites. Considering the importance of new online platforms for journalism, this study aims to present a quantitative analysis of user participation on the Facebook pages of the three Portuguese TV news channels, specifically RTP3, SIC Notícias and TVI24, between 8 and 14 February 2016. To track this participation, the following parameters were used: the "like" button as a way to study the demonstration of publication interest; "sharing" of a particular element, be it a photo, a video or a text, on their own Timeline, the Timeline of a friend or by private message. This monitoring is important to understand the dissemination of news content; and the comments area. The number of comments will help understand the dynamics and the discussion that the publication has on the public. The results of 1063 posts indicate that of the analysed parameters - "Like", "Comment", and "Share" – the one with the greatest power of participation among the users of the pages of the three Portuguese TV news channels is the "Like" system, followed by "Share" and then "Comment". Analysing the thematic that create the most user participation with "Likes" and “Comments” parameters are "Science and Technology". “Education” and “Humorous/Satirical/Unusual Finally, the publications available end of the night (10pm-1am) has better participation rates.

Young Users and the Swipe Logic in Smartphones
(Meltemi, 2019-03) Fernandes, Samuel; Rodrigues, Rui; Oliveira, Lídia
In a society of quick technological development, coupled with the growing use of smartphones, new habits of interaction and consumption of contents arise, namely, through gestures based on touch. One of these new habits of interaction is the swipe - quick movement done with the thumb. This gesture allows users to make decisions quickly, spontaneously and decisively, which may not only refer to the swipe logic as a technical aspect of interaction, but also to associate it with possible behavioral changes in the interaction with contents. The aim of this study was to understand if this interaction logic is implicit in the young, if they use it regularly, and if it has implications in the way they interact with them. In order to reach this goal, 34 students from the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro were asked to take a test using the eye tracker, where they had to complete the proposed tasks, which could be solved with or without the swipe logic. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that participants with android operating system are not familiar with the swipe logic. On the other hand, the participants with the iOS operating system showed to be familiar with this logic and have used it to complete the tasks that have been proposed. Finally, the results also showed that participants were able to perform tasks more efficiently using this interaction logic.
