| This thesis examines the development, institutionalisation, and sociocultural and political influences of psychoanalysis in Brazil and Portugal, highlighting the similarities and differences in how Freudian thought was incorporated into each context. The central research problem consists in understanding how historical, institutional, and cultural factors shaped distinct trajectories in the expansion of psychoanalysis in the two countries. The general objective of this study is to compare the development of psychoanalysis in Brazil and Portugal. The specific objectives include identifying the main historical milestones, examining the predominant theoretical schools, characterising the training models, analysing the social acceptance of psychoanalysis, and assessing the influence of political contexts on its consolidation. Methodologically, this is a narrative literature review with a qualitative approach. Specialized literature, institutional documents, and publications indexed in databases such as SciELO, PePSIC, CAPES Journals, B-on, RCAAP, and Google Scholar were consulted. passe para português. The findings show that, while Brazil developed a plural psychoanalytic tradition widely disseminated in academic and cultural spheres — with a strong Lacanian presence — Portugal followed a later and more centralised path, influenced primarily by the British and post-Kleinian schools and marked by political restrictions during the Estado Novo regime. Differences in training models, social recognition, and institutional structures reveal asymmetrical trajectories, although converging in some contemporary aspects. This thesis contributes to the systematisation of a dispersed theoretical body and to the strengthening of dialogue between the Brazilian and Portuguese contexts. Limitations include the scarcity of direct comparative studies and restricted access to essential Portuguese historical documents. Future research is recommended to explore more deeply the causes of these differences between the two countries and to extend the comparison to other Portuguese-speaking nations.
