| dc.description.abstract | Contexto e Objetivo: A solidão associa-se a diversas situações sociais, físicas e emocionais na população idosa. Este estudo teve como objetivos verificar quais os correlatos dos sentimentos de solidão numa amostra da população idosa e verificar se os afetos positivo e negativo eram mediadores entre o nível de funcionalidade e os sentimentos de solidão. Todos os participantes foram avaliados com a Loneliness Scale-16 itens, Geriatric Depression Scale-8 itens, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule e Escala de Funcionalidade Geriátrica. Resultados: As pessoas idosas institucionalizadas, do sexo feminino, com profissão manual, viúvos, e com baixa escolaridade reportaram mais sentimentos de solidão. Os sentimentos de solidão relacionaram-se com o nível de funcionalidade, sintomas depressivos e com a afetividade. No modelo mediacional, somente o afeto positivo se mostrou como variável mediadora, controlando para o efeito do estado civil e dos sintomas depressivos. Assim, as pessoas idosas mais funcionais tendiam a relatar níveis mais elevados de afeto positivo, o que, por sua vez, era responsável por um nível mais baixo de sentimentos de solidão. Conclusão: Este estudo sugere a relevância de avaliar e intervir no afeto positivo para amenizar os sentimentos de solidão em pessoas idosas que sofrem de limitações funcionais. / Context and Objective: Loneliness is associated with several social, physical, and emotional situations in the elderly population. We aimed to verify the correlates of feelings of loneliness in a sample of the elderly population and verify whether positive and negative affects were mediators between functionality and feelings of loneliness. Methods: The sample consisted of 489 individuals aged between 65 and 100 years (M = 80.18 ± 7.05), 373 were women, 428 were from an institutional context, and 61 belonged to the community. All participants were assessed with the Loneliness Scale-16 items, Geriatric Depression Scale-8 items, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and Geriatric Functionality Scale. Results: The institutionalized older adults, female, with previous manual professions, widowed, and with low education reported more feelings of loneliness. Feelings of loneliness were related to functionality, depressive symptoms, and affectivity. In the mediational model, only positive affect was shown as a mediating variable, controlling for marital status and depressive symptoms. Thus, more functional older people reported higher levels of positive affect, which accounted for less feelings of loneliness. Conclusion: This study suggests the relevance of evaluating and intervening in positive affect to alleviate feelings of loneliness in older people who suffer from functional limitations. | pt_PT |
